Medicine For Your Spirit

What is Spirituality really?

Raelene Byrne - Medicine for Your Spirit - Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Recently, with all the changes happening, I have been asked on many occasions what this  “Spirituality” is all  about. Some people are nervous and challenged by what they think it is, some even wondering if it is a “cultish” experience.

This is a question that I am being asked more and more and am also being asked to describe how it feels. Many people are beginning to ‘wake up’, to realise there is much more to this life we are experiencing, however there is uncertainty about the capacity they have to adopt these philosophies. Some people feel the ‘spiritual path’ is too complex, or they feel that in themselves they have too many issues and complications to engage in that way of life. They are worried about all the misconceptions of what spirituality really is.

I can say that spirituality is NOT about religion, dogma, rigid rules, sacrifice, punishment, flowing robes, dreadlocks, living in tepees, or meditation for hours every day.

It is however something that we all have inside us, around us, moving through our world in every moment, every heartbeat and every breath.

It is that yearning to know you on a deeper level

It is the desire to be a better person

It is the understanding that we have our own personal truth and how we can live it daily

It is a moment where we question a belief that we have been indoctrinated with and finally realise it doesn’t serve us, and we can release it.

It is the connection to nature, the planet, and the star filled skies

It is the feeling you have when a child really hugs you around the neck, with both arms and they bury their head in your shoulder

It is the birdsong first thing in the morning and as you hear it, really hear it, the sound makes you feel glad to be alive

It is the time you walk in the rain and are grateful for all it brings to the earth and not about the inconvenience of getting wet

It is the moment in a movie where you feel the emotions and tears slip from your eyes

It is the heart song when a new baby sees you and smiles at you

It is the recognition that you are more than you thought

It is the courage you stand in, to discover who you are and to align with that deeper part of you

It is the friend who listens without judgement, no matter how crazy you sound

It is the smile that is exchanged between complete strangers, in a moment of connection

It is the time you are surrounded in the beauty of nature and you feel part of it

It is the music that takes you into a place in your memory where you are lost in the vibration and everything is moving in time to the rhythm

It is that time you acknowledge a child and praise them, only to be met with total joy

It is the feeling of seeing how incredible the ocean is in its cycles, the life it supports,  the tides and the flow of its intelligence

It is the movement of the wind in the trees

It is the messages in the clouds that we share as we lie on the grass and look towards the heavens

It is the community holding space and energy for a greater cause

It is the teacher, who shows up to class, tired, overworked, not feeling well, but committed to the little ones in their care

It is the parent’s dealing with the ‘end of the day craziness’, where chaos is transformed into laughter and all things change

It is that time when the house sleeps, the sound of silent peace

It is in the stepping up to be truthful for yourself, or for another

It is the washing of the dishes where you share your day with another and debrief

It is the recognition of trees and how they hold each other underneath the earth with their roots entwined, to all stand tall and strong against all the elements of nature

It is the gift of a flower that a child brings to you, not seeing the ‘weed’ just the beauty of creation and wanting you to receive it

It is the giving of yourself when you see another in need

It is in the simplicity of the breath

It is in the flames of a campfire, where people are watching the flames and cleansing their souls

It is the unknown gift that arrives on your doorstep

It is the plate of food that is gifted when you are unwell

It is the cup of tea that your partner brings to you, just because they thought you needed one

It is the neighbour that mows your lawn, or takes your bin out

It is the moment of inspiration that seemingly comes out of the blue

It is the waking from a dream and the message stays with you all day

It is the sign on the roadside that you read and it answers your dilemma, or offers inspiration

It is the peace that you have when you daydream

It is the warmth of the sun on your face

It is the hot bath that you nurture yourself in at days end

It is the moment where you are feeling totally connected to all, that you feel the size of the universe

It is the feeling after a good cry

It is the sense of forgiveness when you take ownership of something

It is the story that a complete stranger shares with you

It is the pets we have in our lives that offer their love without question and know us

It is every kind act,

It is every expression of community, connection, camaraderie

It is words said with beautiful intentions

It is support, friendship,

It is everywhere, It is all around, it is you, it is life

So many people are fearful that their lives have to change if they choose to be more ‘spiritual’.

We already are. Spirituality is the awareness that we are all here for our own purpose, we are all here as a connected family, we are all here to do what we need to, we are all here to know who we truly are and what we have to offer

There is no line to cross, no doctrine to learn, no rules to follow, no places of worship, no right or wrong.  There is only our own inner journey, We question the beliefs that we have been taught, we look at the life we have lived and where we can make different choices, we start to tune in more to the whispers of what we know internally, we begin to honour the many aspects of who we are, we choose to nurture ourselves and take better care of our physicality.

Spirituality is our heart’s wisdom, our hearts knowing, our hearts story, our hearts truth. To stand in that truth is to be spiritual. It makes us more complete. It serves us in ways of awareness, kindness, makes us accountable to the way we choose to live. It serves us to be better, to work towards being all that we are . It makes us understand our place in this fabulous story of  the evolution of humanity

The only thing that you can really fear by choosing to open up to the spiritual you, the truth of your heart and soul, is that you will see how limited you have been up until now. You will see the greatness and magnificence of who you truly are. To stand in that can be overwhelming and confronting, but we need to see that, and bring it into this world. It is the blessing we have to share with our other human family on this spiritual quest.

We have to own that we completely unlimited and infinitely amazing

Whether you are digging ditches, or running international corporations, you are a spirit that is bursting to be acknowledged. There is no fear in being everything that you are, there is only freedom.

Namaste
