RETURN OF CEREMONIES

Weddings, birthdays, Christmas, Easter and  many other celebrations and ceremonies have become retail therapy driven advertising experiences that have left many of us feeling like ‘something is missing’.

We have forgotten and neglected the graceful art of ritual and ceremony in our lives at large..

This means that we don’t connect to ourselves, each other or the elements and nature as our ancestors did in their daily lives.

Our ancestors followed the cycles of the moon, the seasons, the tides; they studied and honored the journey of the stars across our skies. There were celebrations, ceremonies and rituals for all parts of life. They consisted of gratitude to the laws of  nature and mother earth, to the energy that ruled the movement of water, and wind, the rising of the sun to begin each day afresh and the setting of the sun to herald a time of rest, and they also asked for blessings for their families, their lands and their wellbeing.

Ceremonies and rituals are returning. Not as “woo-woo”, “hippy dippy” type of shindigs, but as deep connections back to who we are and the significance of the experience that these transitions through life offer as gifts that can never be purchased.

The moments that matter in life, are the ones we hold in our hearts and what better way to share the meaning of them, than to mark the occasion with a ceremony.

Having facilitated a number of ceremonies, I am always humbled by the people who surrender into the intention of it. The beauty of creating something unique and special for the person who wants to celebrate an important transit in life, allows personal messages, words and feelings to be expressed, shared and witnessed.

This was so apparent at a “welcoming Ceremony” for a 1 year old recently. Her parents read their vows of commitment to her upbringing to the large group gathered, followed by some significant and symbolic gestures.  Each person attending was touched at core level.

As a ceremony unfolds, each person attending participates by holding the intention, and as the energy expands and all are cocooned, the hearts of all become one. The feeling is, as if everyone breathes the same inhalation and exhalation together in a moment of time that stands still. To me it feels as if the universe is holding its breath. The time in ceremony is sacred, heart based, truthful, honest and courageous.

And as always, after the ceremony you MUST feast. That is the time the joy erupts and all are able to share, laugh, with a deeper connection of a potent time shared.

There are so many different types of ceremonies, like our minds, they are only limited by your imagination.

Every ceremony creates a memory that lives forever and an experience that is unique and pure.

Namaste
